First, identify which kind of running you hear

A toilet that runs continuously while water spills into the overflow tube points more strongly to a high water level or a fill-valve problem. That distinction matters: replacing a fill valve will not fix a flapper that cannot seal, and adjusting a flapper will not stop water that is already flowing over the overflow tube.

For a silent leak, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing. Color appearing in the bowl confirms that tank water is escaping. If it is much too loose, the chain can tangle or slip under the seal. Start with a small amount of slack—roughly one or two links on many designs—then flush several times and watch the movement. Check the water level and fill valve together

Let the tank refill and watch the final water level. Water should stop below the top of the overflow tube; use the tank’s marked waterline when one is present. A float that moves freely but cannot make the valve close suggests wear or debris inside the fill valve rather than a simple level adjustment.

Use the float as a quick test

Gently lift the float while the tank is filling. If the water stops, adjust the float to shut the valve at the correct level. If it does not stop, close the supply valve. Some manufacturer-approved fill valves can be flushed to remove sediment, but the cleaning method is model-specific. Two seals that look similar can differ in diameter, attachment points, float design, or closing speed.

This is where many quick repairs go wrong. A part may physically attach and still produce a weak flush, close too early, or leak slowly. Match the manufacturer’s part number when possible. When an approved substitute is used, confirm the valve size and toilet model range on the package rather than relying on the word “universal.”

Retest the repair and avoid creating a second problem

Open the supply valve slowly and let the tank fill. Watch the first shutoff, then flush three times. The chain should move without rubbing the lid or catching under the seal. The water should stop at the marked line or below the overflow tube. The bowl should refill normally without a continuing ripple. Dry the floor and supply connection with tissue or a paper towel; a new wet spot is easier to detect on a dry surface.

Repeat the dye test after the tank has been still for several minutes. If no color reaches the bowl and the fill valve remains silent, the repair is holding. If the symptom changes but does not disappear, return to diagnosis instead of replacing the next part automatically. Replacement becomes more reasonable when porcelain is cracked, the flush-valve seat is damaged and cannot be serviced separately, correct parts are unavailable, or several major components are deteriorated.
